Story-Based Emails

Please note this is a sample email and not written for any particular yarn store.

Hi {firstname},

A few years ago I was walking around the Prado Museum in Spain, completely jetlagged and pretty cranky.  Instead of caring about the wonderful pieces of art around me, I just wanted to be in bed. Until I came to a painting of a Spanish princess by Diego Velazquez, called Las Meninas. Something about that snippet of a young princess's life completely mesmerized me.

After getting some sleep, I visited the Picasso Museum with more enthusiasm. I discovered that Picasso was also captivated by Las Meninas and spent a year painting recreations of it.  There was an exhibit of all 50+ paintings in Picasso’s Las Meninas collection.  The majority of paintings in that collection are based on Las Meninas, but there was one I didn’t expect.

I was amused that there was a painting of a piano with a dog lying next to it.  There was no explanation given about why that painting is part of a collection about Las Meninas.  My friend and I spent some time speculating about why he would paint such a random subject in the middle of this collection.

I still don’t know, but I think it is likely that he got bored painting the same subject over and over again.  Artists thrive on creativity and he just had to paint something different.

Do you ever feel that way about your knitting projects?  As makers, we also thrive on creativity and occasionally need to find a new spark.  Are you craving new inspiration?

We’ve got you covered.  Here are some unique yarns to get your creative juices flowing.  Which yarn below will be the material for your piano painting?  We’d love to see your new piece.  Be sure to tag us on all social media.

Why Use Story-Based Emails?

  • Story-based emails set you apart from other yarn stores.
It is not enough to send out a great email. Most of your competitors are also sending out great emails. To stand out, it’s not enough to be good, you need to be different. Telling a story is one way to make your emails unique.

  • Story-based emails help you build trust.
We trust people that we know. When you include stories about your life you become a real person to your clients, which helps build trust. And you don’t need to share anything personal if you don’t want to. My story above only tells you I went to Spain and liked a painting. That makes me human, while still maintaining my privacy.

  • Story-based emails keep the readers hooked.
Hooks aren’t just for crocheting. They are used to pique interest too. We are all bombarded with emails, so we are choosy about which ones we read or even allow into our inbox. It is human nature to be drawn to stories, whether they are on Netflix or a novel. If your emails provide entertainment, people will be likely to read them.

  • Story-based emails sell yarn.
While it is nice to have loyal readers, the real reason for the emails are to sell more yarn. As your readers are hooked on your emails, they will trust you. That trust and the emotional storytelling in your emails will ulitmately drive sales.
